GWU complains about compensation for soldiers who worked through CHOGM and Valletta Summit

-

The General Workers Union, on behalf of the Armed Forces Union, has requested a meeting with the Prime Minister in order to find a solution regarding compensation for Armed Forces members who worked during the Valletta Summit and CHOGM.

In a letter sent by the GWU Deputy Secretary General Kevin Camilleri to the Prime Minister on 28 December, the GWU complained about how soldiers were treated with regard to compensation.

The GWU Deputy Secretary General expressed the GWU’s disapproval that compensation given to soldiers was equivalent to that given 10 years ago for a single event, adding that back then the international circumstances were more tranquil than today.

The work performed by the soldiers during the two conferences, the GWU said, deserves praise and resulted in a good name for the country.

In response to questions put forward by The Malta Independent, a spokesperson from the GWU said that soldiers were paid €110 for their work throughout CHOGM as per payslip.

Asked about whether any meetings have taken place so far, the spokesperson said that up until now, two meetings have been held, one with senior AFM officials at the headquarters and another, last Monday, with Ministry officials following the decision made about compensation.

The spokesperson reported that both meetings were positive and cordial, as Ministry officials and senior AFM officials understood the arguments being put forward.

“Following that, on 28 December a letter was sent to the Prime Minister asking for a meeting regarding the issue of compensation.”
