Alternattiva Demokratika speaks about National Disability Strategy

-

Alternattiva Demokratika - the Green Party stated that the proposals made in the National Disability Strategy are positive and will provide both measures and structures to improve the quality of life of persons with disability giving them a better social equality platform.

Amongst the proposals in the strategy is the proposal for a new and inclusive voting mechanism (Objective 1 SI 7) that AD has been lobbying for in the past elections.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD Chairperson said; “although the strategy is aimed at ‘quality of life’, a revision of the Social Security Act - related to the financial benefits received by persons with disability known as the Disability Pension, still needs to be seriously addressed.”

Furthermore, Alternattiva Demokratika’s spokesperson for Disability Issues, Dr. Claire Azzopardi Lane insisted that: “Objective 10 - Legislation and Access to Justice, should incorporate the reversal of interdiction and incapacitation of persons with disability and instead be replaced by a supported decision making strategy through the Guardianship Act which also requires better mechanisms to make it effective.

“AD believes that the success of this strategy rests on the financial budget allocated to it and the political will for it to be implemented.”
