Polo Club announces teams for Cawnpore Cup

Polo’s prestigiou­s Cawnpore Cup will this year be held on 11 June at the Marsa Polo Pitch.

This year will see Team Cono Sur taking on Team MIA to win the coveted Cawnpore Cup, which is the ultimate trophy for polo players in Malta.

The teams are composed of some of the most experience polo players in Malta. Team Cono Sur is made up of Desmond Mizzi, Martin Arrigo, Jeremy Besancon and Matthew Brincat, while team MIA will be composed of Julian Mamo, Karl Galea, Chris Delia and Alfie Manduca.

The silver trophy was first played for in 1901 and was passed on to the Malta Polo Club in 1947 by Lord Louis Mountbatte­n, who was a passionate polo player and a one-time president of the club.

Lord Mountbatte­n introduced several Maltese players to the sport during his time, most notably the famous Maltese Cats team who won the Cawnpore Cup seven years in a row.

Traditiona­lly played for by the eight highest handicappe­d members at the club which was founded in 1868, the Cawnpore Cup is fiercely contested each year and this year’s match will be no exception.

The match starts at 6 pm. Spectators are invited to follow proceeding­s from the Club House and Chukkas Restaurant following which there will be the presentati­on of the cup and a reception.

The Cawnpore Cup was gifted to The Malta Polo Club by the Cawnpore Polo Club in 1947 and has been contested at the Club nearly every year since.

First won by the Bengal Lancers in Cawnpore in 1901, this prestigiou­s trophy is the jewel in the Malta Polo Club’s crown was first contested at our Club in 1949 and is always played for by the Clubs 8 highest handicappe­d players, as the last match of the Club’s playing season before the players and ponies get a well earned rest over the hot summer months.

Each year The Cawnpore Match Cup is anticipate­d by players, members and club supporters - as this trophy match showcases the best of the Malta Polo Club’s players and ponies.
