Last gasp goal saves Fgura

-

Sirens were a couple of minutes away from registering their third victory on the trot when they were deservedly in front against Fgura yesterday. But a last gasp goal by Fgura’s substitute Warren Chircop saved Fgura, and foiled newly promoted Sirens who would have gaind sole leadership yesterday evening.

Sirens were the better team, even though Fgura had a better start. But Sirens took an early lead almost against the run of play and almost never looked back until Fgura’s last ditch effort.

Sirens played better after taking the lead, and could have added further goals in the first half.

In the second half the match was less intense in the first part with Sirens easily controlling Fgura’s sterile attacks.

In the last twenty minutes of the game Fgura pushed everything forward in search of the equaliser, leaving gaping holes at the back, with Sirens missing a couple of sitters, only to regret it in the end.

Fgura took control of the match in the opening minutes with Sirens on the defensive. Fgura went close with a Marriaga freekick that was well saved by Cini.

On nine minutes in their first real break Sirens forged ahead when from a Miguel Ciantar corner, Charles Newuche headed home.

Sirens were now in the driving seat and created some good scoring opportunities but Charles Newuche and Ciantar failed to score.

Six minutes from time substitute Vaduva almost sealed it for Sirens when he dribbled his way inside the box but his lob over the onrushing goalkeeper went slightly over the bar.

Minutes later Ekani Rodrigues missed another good opportunity for Sirens with his shot missing the upright by a whisker. Sirens paid dearly for these misses as on 91 minutes Fgura drew level.

A melee ensued in front of goal and substitute Warren Chircop managed to squeeze the ball home to the Sirens’ despair. But there was more to come for the newly promoted side as a minute later, one of their best player Miguel Ciantar received the matching orders for dissent.
