Man charged with domestic abuse

A man whose name cannot be mentioned in order to protect the identity of his family has been granted bail following reports of domestic abuse.

The accused was arraigned in court yesterday after his wife accused him of causing her grievous injury and to fear the use of violence against her. He is accused of attacking his wife without the intention of putting her life in danger, threatenin­g her, breaking the conditions of bail from a previous arraignmen­t and relapsing.

In a statement provided to the police, the accused alleged that while asleep in the living room with his two young children, he heard somebody kicking the door from the outside.

Upon opening the door, his wife had stormed in to get clothes and began offending him. He reportedly told her that if this was really her home she would not have left to go to her friend’s residence.

He reported that she began scratching him, pushing him and grabbed his face. He ordered her to leave to which she said that it was her house, and that after he pushed her to the ground where she fell on a number of shoes.

The accused confirmed that the argument took place before their two small children.

Magistrate Anthony Vella, presiding over the case, granted the accused bail against a €1,000 deposit and a personal guarantee of €2,500. A protection order was granted in favour of the family.
