Vittoriosa go second with a goal in each half

Vittoriosa beat a fighting Pieta side with agoal in each half to go second a mere point behind leaders Naxxar who on Saturday were held by Melita. Still fresh from their derby victory against rivals Senglea, Vittoriosa did not set any houses on fire but were still good enough to beat a well organised and somewhat unlucky Pieta side.

For Pieta this was practically their last chance to get amongst those chasing a promotion spot. They failed and are now practically out, even though they could have earned a point yesterday with less errors in front of goal.

Pieta had the early fire with Vittoriosa goalkeeper Magri always in the midst of the action saving shots from Jurgen Suda and Mensah who wrecked havoc in the Vittoriosa rearguard.

But on 13 minutes Vittoriosa broke the deadlock when Ryan Previ made his way inside the areas to beat Montfort with an angled shot.

Ten minutes later Pieta hit back with a good Suda-Cisse Mademba move but Magri was again ready to save.

Seven minutes from the break Pieta went close again with a Manuel Ruiz Perez header going slightly over the bar.

Pieta were back on the attck on the resumption with Magri again saving shots from Jan Busuttil and Neil Pace Cocks.

Three minutes past the hour Vittoriosa’a Andre Farrugia fried slightly over the bar and the same fate fell to Jan Busuttil’s effort on the other sixty seconds later.

Ten minutes from time Vittoriosa put their minds at rest when Osi Lucky Agbeobina finished off from close range a good cross from Clive Spiteri.

Pieta now threw in the towel and Vittoriosa almost scored a third goal four minutes later when the unmarkde Liam Gauci hit the side netting.
