Senglea keep up challenge with hard earned win
Senglea Athletic kept up the challenge beating Zebbug for a hard earned victory.
This win puts Senglea in second place, level on points with Qormi and just one point behind the league leaders.
Senglea were given a very good run for their money by a well organised Zebbug side.
After a difficult start Senglea put the game on the right track with two goals from Terence Vella and looked set for another high scoring victory.
But in the second half Zebbug took their play to another level and Senglea had to defend especially in the late stages after Zebbug reduced the arrears.
Senglea as expected immediately took possoession of the midfield sector and pushed their opponents in their own half, but Zebbug were tactically well organised and never gave away an inch.
Senglea’s first attempt at goal came after 15 minutes through a Peter Sammut header that went over the bar.
On 22 minutes Zebbug hit back with a Trebovac freekick that went slightly wide. Four minutes layter Senglea forged ahead when Terence Vella scored a beauty from a very acute angle. Minutes later Senglea came close again with a Mark Borg header following a corner action.
On 37 minutes Senglea doubled the score when from a Sammut corner, Mark Borg headed towards Terence Vella who fired home from close range. On 43 minutes Cabral had a glorious opportunity but goalkeeper Azzopardi saved in style.
On the resumption Zebbug were more in the game with Senglea protecting their two-goal cushion. On 70 minutes Senglea should have put the game to bed when Cabral dribbled past goalkeeper Azzopardi before passing towards Obaje Smith, whose shot destined for the back of the net was blocked by Gomes Da Silva.
On 75 minutes Zebbug pulled one back when Dario Tabone was tripped by Mark Borg and from the penalty spot Mauricio Rodrigues Britto made no mistake. Five minutes later the Senglea custodian saved his side with a brilliant save off a close range header from Borda.
