Qormi win top clash with early goal

-

The top clash of the weekend was decided by an early Michael Camilleri goal in favour of Qormi who were the better team, even missing a penalty in the second half.

After this victory over the league leaders, Qormi are now in second place, a mere point behind the same Naxxar as the promotion battle is turning into an interesting affair with just four points separating the top six teams, all with a good chance of making the grade.

Naxxar Lions disappointed yesterday, and rarely gave the impression they could earn something from this match after suffering the early setback.

Qormi took the lead after only ten minutes in what proved to be the winner, when from an Ojuola throw in, the ball came in Michael Camilleri’s path who drilled home from close range.

Qormi went close again ten minutes later with a Noah Ojuoal header slightly missing the target.

Ten minutes from the break came Naxxar’s only attempt from a Jurgen Debono effort that went slightly off target.

On the resumption, Qormi continued to hold the upper hand and on 57 minutes Medic tested Omar Borg from an ideal position.

On 75 minutes Qormi should have wrapped up the match when a Sidibe header was handled by Cassar, but from the resultant penalty Darko Medic’s shot hit the crossbar.

Qormi continued to attack and missed a couple of scoring opportunities, with Naxxar unable to make an effort to save the match.
