Sirens back to winning ways

-

After suffering two consecutive defeats in their last two outings Sirens returned to winning ways beating Pieta by the odd goal in three to move to safer waters, where they are practically safe from making a quick return to Division two, as they have joined Pieta on the 29-point mark.

Sirens forged ahead in the 16th minute when Christian Caruana drove the ball home with a low drive after a good measured pass by Charles Newuche.

A minute later, a Mensah effort from the edge of the area was again saved by the Sirens custodian. On 33 minutes Djibril Cisse Mademba missed a sitter following. A minute into injury time a Christian Grech free-kick finished just wide.

Pieta were unlucky not to equalise on 48 minutes when Leonardo Gabrieli in trying to clear a Jan Busuttil cross, hit the crossbar with the ball eventually going wide.

On 58 minutes Mensah managed to lob the ball over Romano but as he tried to tuck the ball away, the Sirens custodian was quick to recover and clear away the danger.

On 61 minutes, Busuttil’s drive was saved for a corner by Romano as Pieta continued to pile up the pressure. Seven minutes from time Sirens scored a second when substitute Daniel Agius hit a scorcher from an acute angle after some good work by Christian Caruana.

Three minutes later Christian Grech headed home a cross from inside the area to give Pieta hope but although Christian Grech came close again in the final seconds, but was denied by Romano, Sirens held well to win the encounter.
