Parents of young road accident victim ‘still in the dark’ 14 months on

- Rachel Attard

14 months after their daughter died in a tragic road accident, Johanna Boni’s parents are still being left in the dark.

27-year-old Johanna died on 8 January, 2016, when she was crushed by a cement mixer in Labour Avenue, Naxxar. She was riding a motorcycle.

Speaking to The Malta Independent yesterday, Johanna’s mother, Josephine, said: “My husband and I feel stuck and we are facing a wall. Till today we do not have any information about what happened.” Mrs Boni said they are being kept in the dark and her accident is kept top secret. “I don’t even have a sketch of the accident.”

However, her mother’s drive and determination to continue to create awareness on road safety led her to organise a football match in memory of her daughter and other road victims. This match, that will be held on 18 March at the Mellieħa football grounds, will see two teams consisting of Maltese and Italian professionals, including lawyers, doctors, media personalities and others, playing together. This philanthropic event will raise funds for Puttinu Cares.

Manuela Barbarossa, the President of the Associazione Italiana Vittime e Infortuni della Strade, will form part of the 35-person Italian delegation. The match will be aired on Radio Europa.

Other small activities will be incorporated into the main event. “I made 300 love jars with shells from Johanna’s favourite beach in Sicily (pictured) and other Italian friends made Sicilian sweets which will be sold on the day.”

Mrs Boni appealed to all bikers and enthusiasts to attend and show support and solidarity.

A memorial bike ride was held in January.
