Bayern Munich embarrass Arsenal to reach Champions League quarter-finals

Real Madrid through to quarter-finals

-

Arsenal conceded five goals in the space of 30 minutes as Bayern Munich progressed through to the Champions League quarter-finals with a 10-2 aggregate win over the Premier League side.

Theo Walcott had given Arsenal hope with an early goal but after the dismissal of Laurent Koscielny, Arsene Wenger's side capitulated just like they did in the first leg in Germany.

Arsenal went into the match requiring a four-goal victory to give themselves a chance of progressing through to the last eight, but they got off to a slow start in North London as Bayern threatened to net an early away goal.

After keeping the Gunners on the back foot, David Alaba sent a shot just wide from distance but Arsenal eventually posed a threat in the final third with Olivier Giroud seeing a header deflected wide.

In the 20th minute, the home netted the early goal which they required as Walcott powered his way through the Bayern defence before sending a thunderous strike from an acute angle into the roof of the net.

Bayern went back onto the offensive but shortly after the half-hour mark, Arsenal felt like they should have been awarded a penalty after Xabi Alonso felled Walcott, but the Spaniard managed to get a touch on the ball.

Walcott and Arturo Vidal fired wide for their respective sides before seven minutes from the break, Robert Lewandowski dragged a volley wide of the post after a sublime pass from Arjen Robben.

Three minutes after half time, Arsenal should have netted their second Real Madrid have booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after recording a 3-1 win over Napoli in the second leg of their last-16 tie in Naples yesterday night.

The reigning champions entered the match with a 3-1 lead from the first leg in Madrid, and a double from Sergio Ramos and late Alvaro Morata finish helped Zinedine Zidane's side ease into the next round with a 6-2 aggregate score.

Napoli's leading scorer this season Dries Mertens overcame an ankle problem to start for the hosts, and there were also spots in the XI for midfield pair Allan and Amadou Diawara as head coach Maurizio Sarri shuffled his pack.

As for Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale returned from injury and league suspension respectively to start alongside Karim Benzema in the final third, while Dani Carvajal, Marcelo and Toni Kroos also returned to the selection.

Napoli went after Real Madrid when Aaron Ramsey floated a cross into the box for Giroud, but he sent a free header over the crossbar from 12 yards.

Arsenal needed to score that goal to realistically have any chance of a miracle comeback, and the tie was put to bed just six minutes later as Bayern netted an equaliser.

Koscielny was sent off after the official behind the goal advised the referee to upgrade his initial yellow card to red for a foul on in the early moments and had a half-chance inside two minutes when Diawara fed Mertens on the edge of the away side's box, but his effort was just deflected over Keylor Navas's crossbar.

Indeed, the opening 10 minutes of the clash were played in Real Madrid's half of the field as Marek Hamsik, who fired a low effort wide of Navas's post early on, continued to pick passes in the final third, with Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne both willing runners for the Italians.

Insigne came close to finding the bottom corner with a driven effort in the 14th minute as Napoli continued to put the pressure on the European champions, but Navas was on hand to make a smart save, before Pepe Reina kept out a long-range Kroos effort down the other end of the field.

Reina was again called into action in the 18th minute to keep out an attempt from Bale, and it was at that point that Real Madrid just started to settle after Napoli flew out the traps in search of an Lewandowski, and the Polish forward made no mistake from the spot.

The man advantage allowed the visitors to dominate the remainder of the match and with 22 minutes left, Bayern began to inflict further damage on Arsenal.

After a poor clearance from David Ospina, Robben eventually found himself behind the home side's defence and he was able to easily place the ball past the goalkeeper early goal.

It was the home side that made the breakthrough on the night in the 24th minute, however, when Mertens smashed the ball into the bottom corner after a cute pass from Hamsik had released the Belgian inside the Real Madrid box.

Los Blancos should have levelled the scores five minutes later when Ronaldo rounded Reina inside the Napoli box following a swift counter-attack, but the number seven somehow struck the post in front of an open goal.

Kalidou Koulibaly had a super chance to send Napoli 2-0 ahead 10 minutes before the break when he rose unchallenged inside the Real Madrid box, but the centreback's header was over the crossbar.

It was then Napoli's turn to strike the woodwork as Mertens fired against the post after freeing himself inside the Real Madrid box following more lacklustre defending from the Spanish giants.

Real Madrid had a half-chance from 12 yards.

The second goal allowed Carlo Ancelotti to make changes and his first substitute Douglas Costa netted Bayern's third as he curled into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Arsenal and their supporters were keen to hear the final whistle but Bayern were ruthless as they reached double figures in the tie without much resistance from their English opponents. to level the scores early in the second period when Benzema worked some space inside the Napoli box, but the French striker's effort was always wide of Reina's near post.

The visitors were more progressive and more threatening in the final third, however, and found an equaliser in the 52nd minute when Ramos rose highest inside the Napoli box to head an inswinging Kroos corner into the back of the net.

Napoli boss Sarri looked to his bench for the first time in the 56th minute as Marko Rog replaced Allan, but the tie was effectively over one minute later when Ramos headed another Kroos corner into the back of the net to send Real Madrid 5-2 ahead on aggregate.

Rog tried his luck from distance in the 65th minute as Napoli desperately tried to respond, but the midfielder's effort was always too high as Real Madrid closed on a spot in the quarter-finals once again.

Both goals came through Vidal, who firstly clipped the ball over Ospina after being played through before five minutes later, he was able to tap home after being teed up by Costa.

As fans made an early exit, Arsenal managed to see out the remainder of the game without conceding a sixth but they must face up to the failure of not reaching the last eight of this competitive for the seventh successive year.
