Ten-man Qormi obtain vital victory

-

Ten-man Qormi scored a great winner on 85 minutes to gain a vital victory and keep their promotion hopes alive, as they are now a mere point behind fourthplaced Mqabba.

On 21 minutes Vittoriosa took the lead when from a Mallia freekick, Ogunnupe headed towards Peter Mrvic who anticipated goalkeeper Azzopardi to hammer home. Qormi pushed forward in search of the equaliser but were again unlucky on 28 minutes when a Michael Camilleri freekick was again stopped by the upright.

But two minutes later Qormi were rewarded when from a Mark Barbara well taken corner, Yanick Yankam on the far post managed to head the ball home from an acute angle.

Qormi continued to attack but a defensive blunder almost cost them dearly with Obinna Obiefule’s point blank shot brilliantly saved by Azzopardi.

In the second half Qormi continued to attack but Vittoriosa were more determined and more dangerous up front.

Twelve minutes from time Qormi were dealt a severe blow when Quincy Bregman tripped substitute Leighton Grech who was darting towards goal, and referee Stankovic sent off Bregman.

But five minutes from time Qormi scored what proved to be the winner when Michael Camilleri

scored a gem of a goal direct from a freekick.

Vittoriosa pushed desperately forward and on 90 minutes were umnlucky not to obtain the equaliser when Mbong passed towards Leighton Grech whose scorcher slammed against the upright.
