Malta at Russia world championsh­ips

Malta is taking part in the ISSF World Championsh­ip Shotgun currently underway at the Fox Lodge Shooting Range, Moscow Region - Russia.

Taking part in the Men’s Trap event were Brian Galea, who finished in position 63 with the score of 114 /125, Nicky Carabott followed with 112 /125, while Frans Pace finished with the score of 107/125. The athletes were being supervised by coach Frans Bugeja.

Yesterday morning, the Maltese Double Trap team, assisted by coach Jimmy Bugeja, left Malta for Russia to participat­e in Moscow’s World Championsh­ip - Shotgun.

This team includes William Chetcuti, Nathan Lee Xuereb and Mathew Grech who will be competing in the Men’s event, whereas Gianluca Chetcuti will be competing in the Men’s Junior event. They will be in action tomorrow.

640 athletes from 76 nations will compete in 22 shotgun medal events, including separate junior competitio­ns, team events, and the new Mixed Team events that were recently approved by the ISSF and the IOC for inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Program.

The first set of medals was delivered yesterday, when Italy’s Maria Lucia Palmitessa climbed on the highest step of the podium for the first time in her career as she won the Gold Medal in the Women’s Trap Junior event.

The 2012 Olympic Champion Jessica Rossi also of Italy took first place in the Women’s Trap event, as she earned her third senior world title, adding to a junior world title and to 8 world cup podiums. Rossi had won her last ISSF medal back in 2013.

Clement Bourgue of France prevailed over Italy’s Matteo Marongiu in the Trap Men Junior event final stages with the score of 43/50 to 42/50. Incidental­ly, Bourgue was also the winner at the Malta Internatio­nal Open Grand Prix 2017 Trap Men Junior Category earlier on this year.

In the last Trap individual event, Daniele Resca of Italy claimed the top prize as he beat GBR’s Edward Ling 43/50 to 40/50 in the Trap Men final stages.
