Investigators dismantle device in search of SIM card
Investigators were yesterday dismantling the undetonated car bomb that was placed underneath a vehicle in Fgura on Friday evening at around 6pm so as to ascertain whether a SIM card had been used in the planned blast, sources close to the police told The Malta Independent.
The bomb is believed to be have been homemade.
The SIM card would prove crucial in finding the perpetrator who placed the bomb, which was activated but which failed to have been triggered, underneath a Mitsubishi Pajero that was parked in a residential area on St Anthony’s Street, and which could have potentially injured other civilians.
The vehicle has been impounded by the police for further inspection.
The newsroom has also been informed that the car belonged to Mario Scicluna, a Gozitan from Sannat, who resides in the area in which the bomb was planted.
Sources have said that Scicluna is known to the police for his involvement in crime circles, however, he was not one of the 10 who had been arrested in connection with the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Had the bomb been detonated, it would have been the seventh of its kind since the start of 2016.
The newsroom was told that investigators are examining whether the explosive used is linked to the other attacks and cannot, as matters stand, say for certain whether there is any correlation.
