Underdogs Qrendi and Zejtun pick up Birkirkara and Valletta respectively
Underdogs Qrendi FC and Zejtun Corinthians yesterday picked up two Premier League outfits, Birkirkara and Valletta respectively, when the draws for the Malta FA Trophy (supported by Boost Diesel) quarter-finals, were made at the National Stadium yesterday.
These two teams, Zejtun Corinthians and Qrendi FC, occupy seventh and eighth placings in the First Division. It is a first for both teams to have reached so far in the history of the competition and their clubs.
Qrendi FC representative Carmel Farrugia spoke to TMI about his side’s achievement so far in the knock-out competition.
“We are very pleased to have reached this far in this illustrious competition. Both for us and Zejtun this is the first time in the history of both clubs to have done so. Birkirkara will be very tough in the quarterfinals but we will do our best.“
Premier League champions Hibernians will have to battle it out with Sliema Wanderers, while Lija Athletic will meet Premier League leaders Balzan in the other all Premier League meeting.
The quarter-final matches will be played on 17 and 18 February.
