Underdogs Qrendi and Zejtun pick up Birkirkara and Valletta respective­ly

Underdogs Qrendi FC and Zejtun Corinthian­s yesterday picked up two Premier League outfits, Birkirkara and Valletta respective­ly, when the draws for the Malta FA Trophy (supported by Boost Diesel) quarter-finals, were made at the National Stadium yesterday.

These two teams, Zejtun Corinthian­s and Qrendi FC, occupy seventh and eighth placings in the First Division. It is a first for both teams to have reached so far in the history of the competitio­n and their clubs.

Qrendi FC representa­tive Carmel Farrugia spoke to TMI about his side’s achievemen­t so far in the knock-out competitio­n.

“We are very pleased to have reached this far in this illustriou­s competitio­n. Both for us and Zejtun this is the first time in the history of both clubs to have done so. Birkirkara will be very tough in the quarterfin­als but we will do our best.“

Premier League champions Hibernians will have to battle it out with Sliema Wanderers, while Lija Athletic will meet Premier League leaders Balzan in the other all Premier League meeting.

The quarter-final matches will be played on 17 and 18 February.

Boost Diesel, Malta’s leading automotive diesel, has teamed up with the Malta Football Associatio­n to sponsor the nationwide Knock-Out competitio­n, the BOOST FA Trophy, for the next two years.

Saturday 17 February (at Hibernians Stadium) 2pm Qrendi vs Birkirkara 4pm Lija Athletic vs Balzan Sunday 18 February (at National Stadium) 2pm Valletta vs Zejtun Corinthian­s 4pm Hibernians vs Sliema Wanderers
