St Venera and Mellieha promoted

St Venera Lightnings virtually assured themselves of the Third Division championsh­ip when they thrashed their second placed rivals Mellieha by four goals to nil in the second match at the Luxol Stadium on Saturday. Chris Vella opened the scoring on 18 minutes with the usual Eddie Wileman adding a hat trick on 39, 48 and 67 minutes. However, Mellieha were still promoted due to the result of the Kirkop-Xghajra match.

In fact, Kirkop United leapfrogge­d Xghajra Tornados in the playoff spot when they beat them 3-1 in the second match at the Sirens Stadium on Saturday. Reuter Degiorgio but Xghajra ahead on 13 minutes from the penalty spot but goals from Melchior Grech on 51’, Luca Mizzi on 52’ and Karl Caruana on 80’ sealed the issue for Kirkop.

Mdina Knights registered a huge win over Marsaskala when they thrashed them 6-0 in the first match at the Luxol Stadium on Saturday. The goals came from Cachel Vella on 15’, Samuel Bartolo 40, a hat trick by Mark Saliba on 19’, 41’and 64’ and Stefi Cale on 89’.

In a match without much interest, Ghaxaq sprang a surprise when they beat Msida St Joseph by two goals to nil in the first match at the Sirens Stadium on Saturday. Dean Agius opened the scoring on 49 minutes with Ian Calleja doubling two minutes from time.

In the first of two matches at the Charles Abela Stadium on Sunday, Dingli Swallows defeated Ta’ Xbiex by three goals to nil. The goals came from Christian Schembri on 30’, Andrew Scerri on 55’and Robert Ciantar on 90’.

In the second match, Zurrieq beat Mtarfa by two goals to nil. Tarek Ibrahim opened the scoring on 29 minutes with Josef Felice adding another deep in stoppage time.
