Largest ‘army’ since Independence marches into Valletta
What is probably the largest armed force to enter Valletta since Independence, will be doing so in a grand parade following the re-enactment of a historic battle that took place 220 years ago, almost to the day.
Hundreds of re-enactors from 17 European countries and representing the opposing forces of the Order of St John and those of the French Republic shall clash at the woodland area located between Sa Maison and Portes des Bombes.
In what was one of the last engagements before the Order’s capitulation, Grand Master von Hompesch dispatched a detachment of the “Reggimento di Malta” - the Island’s sole line infantry regiment, and a number of marine companies. Allegedly the aim of their desperate sortie was to “shed some blood” thus rendering the anticipated surrender “more honourable”.
At the beat of drums, the Maltese force (that also included many foreign mercenaries) was actually ambushed by the battlehardened men of Colonel Marmont whose success in the battle won him a promotion to general – a road that would eventually make his one of the most successful military careers in Europe.
The battle re-enactment shall take place on Tuesday 5th June at 10.30am, whilst the parade into Valletta shall commence at Pjazza Tritoni at 12.30pm.
The event is being organised by HRGM which is the year celebrating its 20th anniversary.
