Another successful year for HSBC Water Programme

An exhibition of ‘Imagine Water, Catch the Drop’ art project in Valletta, a pioneering vertical wall garden in Luqa Primary School, and installation of push-button water taps at St Michael School Pembroke are just three in a series of notable water conservation projects forming part of HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop during 2017/2018 scholastic year.

St Michael School collaborated with HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop campaign to switch to the more efficient taps in the school. The measure aimed to make long-term improvements in water management and water efficiency in the school and also increased student awareness of how precious water is and what they and their community can do to conserve it.

At Luqa Primary, students grow herbs in a vertical garden with virtually no water loss. Using recycled material, organic soil substitute and a water-conserving irrigation system, they have set up the garden to grow fresh herbs and lettuce.

Meanwhile, the ‘Imagine Water, Catch the Drop’ art project, which was exhibited last May at St James Cavalier, Valletta as part of the Valletta 2018 activities, will now move to Gozo and run at Cittadella Culture Centre, Victoria, Gozo from 3 to 26 August 2018. The three-year art project was a result of collaboration between HSBC Malta and France-based l’association École d’art au village (Edaav).

The project was designed to engage artists, teachers, and students in a long-term and meaningful creative process while raising awareness of the importance of water to the Maltese islands. A total of 150 students participated in the project.

The HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop was the largest ever national environmental and educational campaign of its kind in Malta and aimed to forge a blueprint for progress on sustainability of water as a resource. It ran from 2013 to 2018 before making way for new HSBC Water Programme initiatives. To-date, HSBC has invested nearly €1 million on various water-related schemes in Malta.
