Finnish teen swindled Maltese online casino out of quarter of a million euros

-

The parents of a tech-savvy Finnish teenager are in court in their country after their son swindled an unnamed Maltese online casino out of €250,000, and they were found to have shared the loot.

On Tuesday, Finnish media outlet YLE reported a case of aggravated fraud currently in the Häme District Court involving a teenager from the town of Forssa, who discovered a glitch in the software of an unspecified Malta-based online casino.

According to the report, the teenager who is now about 18 years old, found that the casino software had allowed him to cancel customers’ pending withdrawal requests, and instead have the money transferred to an online wallet rather than the customers’ bank accounts.

The reportedly made 147 withdrawal requests in just one month, taking the gaming operator for a total of €250,000 before an employee discovered the ruse in July 2017.

Finnish prosecutors have charge the child’s parents as accomplices after €14,000 of the misappropriated funds ended up in his father’s bank account.

They are asking the courts to sentence the youth to 20 months imprisonment and have charged the father with aggravated money laundering, for which they are seeking a five-month suspended sentence.

The report stated only that the mother was facing a “more lenient suspended sentence” based on her own money laundering charges.

The Court is expected to deliver its ruling matter early next month.
