Romagnoli strikes again for AC Milan

-

AC Milan captain and central defender Alessio Romagnoli scored the winner yesterday on 94 minutes to give his side a 1-0 victory away to Udinese.

Romagnoli also scored Milan’s last gasp winner against Genoa on Wednesday.

Udinese were down to ten on 92 minutes and Milan took advantage two minutes later.

Romagnoli’s goal was awarded thanks to the VAR technology as the assistent referee had wrongly flagged for offside.

Having recently lost his starting job for Italy, Ciro Immobile remains a constant scoring threat in Serie A.

Perhaps with an eye on regaining his place with the Azzurri, Immobile scored twice and also hit the post to help Lazio beat Spal 4-1.

Immobile's brace gave him eight goals for the season, good for second in the league behind Genoa's Krzysztof Piatek.

Torino goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu has saved four out of five penalties since the start of 2018 in Serie A — the best rate in Europe's top five leagues.

However, Fabio Quagliarella turned in the rebound from Sirigu's save for Sampdoria's only goal in a 4-1 loss to Torino.

Andrea Belotti scored twice for Torino, which also got goals from Iago Falque and Armando Izzo.

Sixth-place Sassuolo beat lastplace Chievo Verona 2-0 with an opener from Federico Di Francesco and an own-goal from Emanuel Giaccherini.

Atalanta came from behind to win 2-1 at Bologna and Parma and Frosinone played to a 0-0 draw.

Man City on scoring spree

Manchester City displayed ruthless efficiency yesterday to raise more questions over who can stop Pep Guardiola's team powering to a second straight English Premier League crown.

Raheem Sterling scored twice and goal-poacher Sergio Aguero was also on target as City marched back to the top of the standings with a 6-1 victory against Southampton at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola's players punished almost every mistake made in the opening stages by a beleaguered Southampton side as they led 3-0 after just 18 minutes.

The visitors pulled one back with a penalty but it proved a minor setback for City, which again dominated Southampton in the second half.

"I thought it was a great team performance," Sterling said. "We were brilliant at times today. It is great times at the moment."

Alvaro Morata continued his recent resurgence with two goals and fellow Spaniard Pedro added a third as Chelsea proved too strong for Roy Hodgson's Palace.

Unbeaten Chelsea made a slow start but Morata cheered the Stamford Bridge crowd by putting his side in front from close range in the 32nd after pouncing on a cross by Pedro.

Palace, beaten in its previous five league matches, leveled early in the second half when James McArthur sent Andros Townsend racing clear and he slammed a ferocious right-foot shot into the net.

Chelsea reacted by bringing on dangerman Eden Hazard and Mateo Kovacic for Willian and Ross Barkley, and within minutes the home team was back in front.

Hazard took a free kick on the right and the ball eluded several players in the penalty box before reaching the unmarked Morata at the back post, and he struck his fourth goal in his last four league games.

Pedro added the third goal from a left-wing cross by another Spaniard, Marcos Alonso, in the 72nd as Chelsea moved on to the same points tally as Liverpool, two behind City.

Sevilla unable to keep pace with Barcelona in Spanish league

Sevilla couldn't manage more than a 0-0 draw at Real Sociedad yesterday and lost ground to Barcelona at the top of the Spanish league.

The draw left Sevilla in second place, four points behind Barcelona, which rallied to win 32 at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. Barcelona also gained from a draw by third-place Atletico Madrid at Leganes on Saturday and a loss by fourth-place Alaves at Eibar yesterday.

Alaves missed a chance to stay in second place after a 2-1 loss at Eibar in a match marked by a series of video reviews.

Villarreal couldn't manage more than a 1-1 draw against Levante at home, staying only one point away from the relegation zone.

Alfonso Pedraza scored the equalizer for Villarreal in stoppage time after Levante had taken the lead with an own-goal by defender Funes Mori in the 77th.

Promoted Huesca was set to leave last place but conceded a stoppage-time goal in a 1-1 home draw against Getafe.

Playing in the top tier for the first time, Huesca hasn't won since the first round, a run of 10 straight matches.

Gladbach moves above Bayern in Bundesliga

Thorgan Hazard scored twice to help Borussia Moenchengladbach return to second in the Bundesliga with a 3-0 win over Fortuna Duesseldorf yesterday.

The Belgian forward, the

younger brother of Chelsea star Eden Hazard, opened the scoring with a penalty early in the second half and sealed the win late after he was sent through by Alassane Plea.

Michael Rensing got his hand to the penalty but couldn't keep it out for the visitors. Jonas Hofmann got 'Gladbach's second goal following a mistake from Kaan Ayhan.

The win sees 'Gladbach move ahead of Bayern Munich on goal difference, four points behind unbeaten Borussia Dortmund.

Veteran striker Claudio Pizarro scored for the third straight game across all competitions but couldn't prevent Werder Bremen slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Mainz.

The 40-year-old Pizarro came on as a second-half substitute when his side was already two goals down and pulled a goal back when Johannes Eggestein found him at the post in the 78th.

Despite the visitors' late pressure, Mainz held on to end its sixgame run without a win.

Bremen missed the chance to move third above Bayern.
