Cement truck procession
A cement truck procession was held in Sliema last Sunday, in what was a satirical statement about today’s world.
The ‘procession’ was the work of Margerita Pulè, an artist, researcher and curator, with a Masters in Fine Arts.
Speaking with The Malta Independent, Pule explained that the event wasn’t motivated by a need to make a statement per so, “although the reference to over-construction is obvious”.
“The artistic intervention was a reference to the fact that construction has become ubiquitous to our lives, and that it is inescapable - it was sort of hailing the cement truck and almost saying (ironically) that the cement truck has the power, not us.
“There was an obvious reference too, to the purcissjoni, and to protests in general,” she explained.
Her website gave further information about the event. “Our lives are run by the growl of the cement mixer. The builder’s truck welcomes in our mornings, and the chaser accompanies our lunch. Our days are counted by the digger and the crane. Construction vehicles are integral to our everyday lives; and now they would like acknowledgement of this fact. In this procession, artist Margerita Pulè acknowledges the authority of the Cement Mixer, and will lead it in a slow walk through along Tower Road in Sliema; a town that has long bent its knee to these construction vehicles.”
