Following the successful participation of the "Jarhead Young Sailor's Foundation Malta" J-109 yacht in the 50th Anniversary Rolex Middle Sea Race 2018, whereby a team of young sailors showed their ability and seamanship in challenging conditions. The Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation is pleased to announce that the Foundation is sponsoring-Daniel Fenech’s participation in the 2018 Rolex Sydney - Hobart race. Following his first successful Rolex Middle Sea Race completion in 2018 Daniel has been awarded the position onboard the TP52 "PYR Jarhead Wot Eva" and will be joining the team 'down under' for the race starting on 26th December 2018.
By demonstrating the Foundation's long term objective to encourage inclusion of the Maltese younger generation, whether they be finding their way in life, newcomers to sailing or experienced dinghy sailors, the Foundation hopes this sponsorship will encourage other young Maltese people to become involved with the Foundation.
In Daniel’s own words: “What an honour to be chosen from such a great Rolex Middle Sea Race team. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the guys onboard Jarhead who have helped me get towards this dream and would also like to thank the Foundation for giving me this one of a kind opportunity!”
Daniel’s father Mr. Michael Fenech explained that Daniel’s uncle was an active member at Vikings Sailing Club when he introduced Daniel to sailing. Daniel was 8 years old and that was when it all began. He participated in many races and regattas both at Vikings and on a national level. Eventually his family got involved too by practically spending every weekend down at Vikings helping out with sailing events and fundraising. From then on Daniel's enthusiasm and love for sailing flourished. Daniel also participated in events abroad such as the Mirror 10 National Championships in Cornwall. At the age of 11 Daniel was given the opportunity to experience keelboats. Under the watchful eye of Mr. Anthony Camilleri he became part of the crew to endless number of races and experiences. In 2012 Daniel moved on to the Malta Young Sailors Club. There he joined the Laser-Radial group moving on to Laser Standard.
In Daniel’s father’s own words: “As a parent I definitely recommend sailing. Our years spent in the sailing scene were truly fun and memorable ones.
Daniel has given so much to sailing but sailing truly gave back years of fun, teamwork, discipline and last but not least, friendships”.
The Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation wishes “fair winds and following seas ”to the foundation’s highly experienced Rolex Middle Sea Race skipper Mr. Richard Nicolson who will be participating in the Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race 2018 together with Jarhead Young Sailors Malta founder Mr. Greg Nasmyth who will skipper the TP52 'Jarhead Wot Eva'. The Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation encourages the general public to follow and support the yacht’s performance during the race which will start on Wednesday 26th December 2018 15:00hrs Central European Time. http://www.rolexsydneyhobart.com/…/20…/pyr-jarhead-wot-eva/…
