Summer Carnival comes to Birżebbuġa too this year
This year’s Summer Carnival will take place in a third locality, Birżebbuġa, Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici has said.
The out-of-season version of carnival is in its seventh edition, with festivities expected to be bigger than previous years in the localities of Marsaskala, St Paul’s Bay and Birżebbuġa.
The event is planned to take place between Friday, 23 and Sunday, 25 August.
Carnival director Jason Busuttil explained that particular attention was being given to ensuring that the event had as little impact on the commercial sector as possible.
A total of 13 floats are expected to take part in the celebrations, with one expected from Gozo. These will be paired with new safety measures to manage their movement through the crowds.
This, Bonnici insists, is the result of past experience, with an effort being made to ensure little inconvenience.
The mayors of the localities in question have celebrated the expansion of traditional Maltese culture into another town and the further expansion of festivities within their localities.
Minister Bonnici noted that the 100 days of summer were expected to be packed with events, and that Malta had become the place to enjoy spending time with family.
He said that the Maltese carnival was different because it was ‘indigenous’ and had elements setting it apart from other carnivals around the world.
Collaboration between various entities such as the University of Malta and MCAST for design and artistic concepts were also announced.
