- DOMENIC AQUILINA

The Malta national futsal team managed to pick up its' first ever point in a competitive futsal competition with a 1-1 result against Greece at the National Sport School in Pembroke on Thursday.

In their first commitment, on Wednesday, Malta went down to Sweden 6-4.

This time round, Zeljko Anicic's Malta sides put matters right with a gallant performance during which the Maltese side led for most of the second half only for Greece to score a late equaliser.

After a goalless first half, the locals went ahead just eighteen seconds into the second half. Carl Azzopardi intercepted a ball from the Greek defence to put Malta into the lead with a fine effort.

Malta held the lead until five minutes from time when Dimitrios Karmis scored the goal which earned the Greeks their first point too in this UEFA Futsal EURO 2022 Group C qualifying tournament being played at the National School of Sport in Pembroke.

Malta conclude their commitments today with a very difficult match against group leaders Poland, themselves 5-2 winners against Greece in the first match on Wednesday, and easing past

Sweden 6-0.

TMI spoke with tournament director Marc Borg about the tournament in general and about the game of futsal in Malta "This is my sixth experience as tournament director with the first tournament being the one held in Cottonera in 2010 being the first one organized by a local club. These tournaments have over the years helped to increase the profile and the quality of the futsal game in Malta. Progress is evident with our local champions now consistently winning the champions league preliminary rounds. It’s now time for our national team. The progress showed during this tournament is a positive sign for things to come." said Borg.
