Barracudas prevail on Saints in the derby

- STANDINGS MAFA FIRST DIVISION STANDINGS MAFA SECOND DIVISION

Balluta Barracudas continued to shine in the MAFA Second Division League as they beat narrowly neighbours San Ġiljan Saints 3-2.

On the other hand, Valletta Stars took advantage of San Ġiljan’s loss as they reached them in the table after a 3-1 victory over Fgura Spartans. Naxxar Victorians and Tarxien AFC cancelled each other to a 0-0 stalemate at the beginning of the second round.

In the only match played from the MAFA First Division, Senglea Gunners and Versity AFC finished their match to a 2-2 draw. As already said, Balluta Barracudas prevailed in the derby against San Ġiljan Saints 3-2 in the most awaited match of the weekend.

It was an exceptiona­l match from Shaun Tortell lads who gave their all against their most quoted opponents. On the other hand, this was the Saints’ second defeat of the season.

Balluta had striker Angelo Migliore in fine form as he netted a hat-trick to push forward his team’s intention for the final three points.

San Ġiljan reacted through Michael Hennessy’s penalty and

Matthew Mallia to put the match into a dramatic finale with Balluta’s keeper Taran Gambin producing a string of important saves to preserve his team’s victory.

Referee: Lorry Sammut. Valletta Stars are now on top of the table alongside San Ġiljan Saints as they saw off Fgura Spartans 3-1.

It was a good match for Kurt Grech’s boys who took advantage of their opponent’s defensive mistakes to get the three points at stake.

Sillah Sainey hit the target twice while Hamza Camara added another one for the Citizens.

Fgura Spartans had levelled the score through player-coach Charlton Schembri but it was not enough to get any points from this match.

Referee: Dorian Caruana. Naxxar Victorians and Tarxien AFC cancelled each other in a disappoint­ing 0-0 score. This result didn’t change their status in the table with Tarxien failing to reduce the distance from the top two teams.

Both teams tried to create some occasions but were erratic in from of goal.

Referee: Gjorgji Bitri. Meanwhile Senglea Gunners and Versity AFC shared the spoils in an entertaini­ng 2-2 scoreline in the match played at the Zurrieq Ground.

Senglea establishe­d a 2-0 advantage before half-time but the champions reacted immediatel­y in the second half to salvage a point from this game.

Lydon Cuschieri’s double put Senglea 2-0 forward before the interval. As said in the second half, Versity AFC produced a fierce reaction and levelled the matters through Robert Perkins and Yakubu Bilali.
