Guidelines issued for police officers regarding the Coronavirus

-

Following consultations with the Police Medical Officer as well as with the Health Department, a number of guidelines were put in place to be taken into effect by all Police Force personnel whilst performing fixed point duties with quarantined persons, as well as when dealing with suspected infected persons, the Malta Police Association said.

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Wednesday that four other countries have been added to the travel ban ( Spain, Germany, France and Switzerland), and anyone who returned from these countries over the past days has to do mandatory quarantine. Abela said anyone who fails to comply will be fined for each time the person does not abide by this law, and the police will be doing spot checks to ensure that people are obeying these instructions so as to prevent new people from contracting the virus.

The Malta Police Association had said that it was to instruct its members not to carry out any quarantine spot checks unless the health authorities issue clear guidelines by Friday.

In a statement later, it appeared that guidelines were issued.

“Whilst on fixed point duties with quarantined persons, Police Force personnel are being provided with the relevant protective equipment to use should the need arises. Unless used, same equipment is to be handed over to officers relieving same and performing the next tour of duty. Should any of the mentioned equipment be used or damaged, The SM in charge is to be informed in order to have same equipment replaced,” the association said.

Officers are to ensure that hands are cleaned regularly and as required. “Pocket sized alcohol rub is also being issued to all Police Force personnel.”

“Should circumstances dictate that you come in close contact with quarantined persons, or suspected infected persons: Put on protective equipment; Call for assistance – Control Room / District Police; Actively deal with the situation if the needs demand so; Afterwards ensure that hands and/or face are washed,” the union said.

District Stations have also been issued with the relevant equipment.
