Cancellati­on of the 26th edition of the Internatio­nal Cycling Tour of Malta

In a press release signed by John Zammit and Joe Bajada, President and Secretary of the Organizing Committee of the Internatio­nal Cycling Tour ta’ Malta, announced that they have cancelled the 26th edition of the Tour of Malta which was expected to be held between the 2nd and the 5th of April 2020. This decision was taken to safeguard people's health.

They claimed that the Malta Cycling Federation has received notificati­on from both the UCI and the UEC about various activities related to cycling that were canceled cause of the spread of the coronaviru­s including the Congress of the UEC had was going to be held during these days in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The statement goes on to say that although the Maltese Government decided to activities open to exceed 2,000 people, the Tour was being cancelled when as a measure of the coronaviru­s, it is being applied compulsory quarantine for two weeks in several foreign countries when cyclists return home, apart from the difficulti­es they will meet when leaving home.

Zammit and Bajada completed saying that it’s really sad that the tour had to be canceled because of the coronaviru­s alerts even though that for this edition there would be a record number of foreign cyclists taking part. But the priority is the prevention to protect the health of everyone, and above all it is a situation of moral obligation and a civic responsibi­lity. Zammit and Bajada closed their statement by hoping that the situation in our country will be back to normal as soon as possible so that the Federation can start races related to its two championsh­ips.
