15,000 people defined as victims of crime in 2019

-

In 2019, the Police Force’s Victims Support Unit received 90,000 reports, and 15,000 people were defined as victims of crime, according to Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri.

Camilleri said that last year there were around 500 people that accepted help from the Victims Support Unit.

“Every case is a different situation, and comes with its own circumstances and emotions,” said Camilleri. He said that it upsets him that there are victims who feel they have no form of support or anyone who cares about them, leaving them feeling alone. “I am aware that there are victims who do not know about their rights and the support services which are there to help them every step of the way.”

Camilleri said that the setting up of the Agency for Victims of Crime carries the sole purpose of providing support to the victim. “The agency’s main priority will be the victim and to ensure they receive the necessary support needed.”

The Minister said that the Agency is part of the electoral manifesto of the previous general election and will be set up in the months to come. “The agency will work hand in hand with NGOs and volunteers who provide the support for victims.”

The minister said that there are still victims who do not wish to seek help because they are not confident in the services provided. “We must work on this immediately, and not only continue providing accessible services, but also to ensure the people to feel confident in such services.”
