Regeneration project on Floriana Maglio garden

-

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg visited the Maglio Garden in Floriana yesterday, where a regeneration project is underway by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation (GHRC).

This intervention will be implemented through a total investment of €4.2 million.

Minister Ian Borg said: “We are committed to continue investing in this area, not only because it is a tourism area, but also as it is very important for the residents of these localities. Floriana is a reference point for all Maltese people travelling to the public transport terminus. When we refer to the importance of our communities, we mean every community, whether it is the local town or village, or on a national basis. We will continue improving our open spaces, improving accessibility for persons with disability and we will continue honouring our country’s heritage and our monuments.”

GHRC Chairman Anthony Agius Decelis made an appeal to the general public to take care of the projects in which the government, through the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects together with the GHRC, is investing millions in funds to regenerate.

“It is now up to the Maltese people to see that these places are not vandalised and are maintained up to the level at which this government is returning them to the people,” said Agius Decelis.

Floriana Mayor Davina Sammut Hili said that the Floriana local council is satisfied with the Maglio Garden works. He said that for several years the council received a lot of complaints, especially over the paving. “Such works require some sacrifice from the residents but, as mayor of the locality, I believe that many residents are eager to start using a renovated garden with more modern facilities.”

“This investment is intended to improve the aesthetic quality of the garden and the area to better complement the aesthetic of City Gate, Pjazza Tritoni, Biskuttin and Argotti Gardens. This project includes 7,500 square metres of new paving and will use special paving for people with impaired vision. Works include upgrading of the space in front of the Examinations Department, new handrails around monuments, restoration of the boundary wall, arches and monuments, boundary wall railings and the rebuilding of the fountain. Additionally, a new lighting system inside and outside the garden as well as other service works will be included.”
