All square in drab affair

- CHRIS CASSAR

Zejtun and Senglea figured in a 1-1 draw in a drab affair that rarely reached high standards. For Zejtun this was their second consecutive draw in their first ever season in the Premier League and for Senglea this was the first point earned after their drubbing against ten-man Lija in their opening match.

Senglea took an early lead in their first attempt at goal and then held on to their slender lead till twelve minutes from time when Zejtun obtained a deserved equaliser. In fact Zej17:00 Pembroke-Pieta Hotspurs 17:00 Qormi-Naxxar Lions 21:15 Marsa FC-Vittoriosa

21:15 San Gwann-Qrendi tun deserved the point at least for their second half effort where the Senglea defence was put under constant pressure especially in the final quarter of the game.

Pereira tried the first shot at goal for Zejtun on six minutes with the ball going over the bar. On nine minutes Senglea took the lead on nine minutes in their first attempt when Dibola

Junior fired a great shot from the edge of the area, leaving Cassar standing.

Zejtun could have equalised on 21 minutes when from a Herrera freekick, Gomes Junior failed to beat Farrugia from close range, with the Senglea custodian making a great save. On 30 minutes Jan Tanti’s freekick sailed over the bar.

Two minutes later another good opportunity for Zejtun with Suda heading just wide from an ideal position.

In the second half Zejtun tried to press for the equaliser but they failed to be effective in front of goal. On their part Senglea defended well and even almost doubled the score on the hour when Parazenin’s close range header was somehow blocked by Cassar.

Zejtun’s best chance for the equaliser came on 77 minutes when substitute goalkeeper Bugeja made a great save off a point blank header from Pereira. This was the prelude to Zejtun’s equaliser which came sixty seconds later when a Pereira shot hit the base of the upright and from the rebound Rafael De Fex slotted the ball home.
