Identity Malta launches new high-tech Identity cards

-

As of Monday, anyone applying for an identity card will be provided with one that includes the latest security features, “which will protect the people’s identity and make it more difficult for the document to be falsified,” the government said.

The launch of these new hightech identity cards took place at the Identity Malta offices, in the presence of Prime Minister Robert Abela.

The new card will be issued to all those who need to replace or renew their current card, and all new applicants. Old cards will be eligible until their expiration date. There will be no mass rollout, unlike other times in the past, as the change will be gradual.

CEO of Identity Malta Anton Sevasta said that the name and details of the cardholder will be laser engraved in black and white polycarbonate substrate. He said that the material will make any alterations very difficult. The card will also feature the cardholder’s finger print. Apart from this, the new identity cards will be contactless, and the data will be accessible only through the use of the Card Access Number, which is printed on the front or stored in a QR code at the back.

Prime Minister Abela welcomed the issuing of the new identity cards, stating that the government is working hard on its digital strategy. “In our modern world that we are living in, it is essential and fundamental that our identity is secured. The government is showing how seriously it is taking the protection of someone’s identity.”
