Swieqi United and University of Malta join Luxol at the top

Swieqi United and University of Malta joined champions Luxol on top the FMA League table as they obtained two precious wins in their respective encounters.

Both teams showed that they will be all out to obtain a place in the final four of the season and battle it out with Luxol and Valletta.

In their first encounter, Swieqi United easily disposed of Żurrieq Futsal as they won 6-0. Their duo Eduardo Riano Garcia and Robert Stoyanov hit the target twice while Michael Borg and Steve Camilleri completed the score for their team.

In their second outing, the Swieqi side had to battle hard to overcome the stiff opposition of Ta’ Xbiex although they still managed to be victorious 6-4.

The latter gave a good account of themselves but unfortunat­ely they still finished on the losing end.

Dylan Pace, Michael Borg, Sergio Morales, Matthew Buhagiar, Eduardo Riano Garcia and Karl Sciortino put their names on the scoresheet for Swieqi with Stefi Cale (2), Glenn Bonello and Matthew Fenech reacting for Ta’ Xbiex.

On their part, University of Malta obtained two consecutiv­e wins against Ibraġġ and Mellieħa respective­ly.

They are on the 12 point mark in the standings together with Swieqi and Luxol although playing a game more. The match against Ibraġġ wasn’t an easy outing for the students as they only managed to win 4-2.

Alexander Ellul scored a double while Cleavon Portelli and Mohammed Salem Benatiya added more goals for the Universita­rians.

Ibraġġ’s reaction came through goals by Ryan Buhagiar and Jurgen Ciantar.

On the other hand, University of Malta had a better showing against Mellieħa as they won 51. The latter were a different side from the first matches of the season as they conceded five goals with Denis di Maio in inspiratio­nal form for the Universita­rians as he netted a hat-trick. Stefan Camilleri scored a double to rubberstam­p his team’s victory.

Mellieħa pulled one back through Ciprian Socacio.

On the other hand, two matches from the lower part of the table proved to be balanced encounters as two draws were registered.

Ibraġġ and Marsaskala shared the spoils in an entertaini­ng 3-3 scoreline. Gilmour Cuschieri proved to be Ibraġġ’s talisman player as he netted a hat-trick while Gianluca lo Giudice, Alessio Restuccia and Dylan Caruana balanced the score for Marsaskala.

Another interestin­g encounter was registered between St Georges and Naxxar Lions. The 3-3 scoreline showed that the match was a balanced affair. Moreover both of them obtained their first point of the season after losing their initial matches. Jean Noel Azzopardi put his name on the score sheet three times while Mattia Mentosa double and Luke Gatt scored for the Cottonera side.
