Laws on paper do not protect people or prevent deaths... actions do - Nationalist Party

-

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, yesterday, the Nationalist Party expressed its sorrow that the day is darkened by the latest femicide in the country.

This was in reference to the murder of Bernice Cassar. Her estranged husband has been charged with her femicide. He is the first person to be charged with willful femicide, an aggravated version of the homicide offence.

Roderick Cassar has pleaded not guilty.

The party said that the laws on paper do not protect people and do not prevent deaths. “It is swift actions, resulting from systems that work efficiently that can do that.”

The PN said that the time for talks and discussions ended long ago, and that now immediate action is needed so that violence against women ends, and every cry for help of every woman is listened to.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the PN pledged that it will continue the fight with greater determination, so that every woman in the country would be safe, and so that the authorities assure that there would be efficient systems where a woman can report a case of violence, where timely action will be taken.
