PN concerned that Malta is losing human resources, demands government action

-

The Nationalist Party is concerned that Malta is losing its human resources, as an EY Survey showed that many youths would rather live outside Malta.

The EY 5th Generate Youth Survey revealed that 77% of Millennials and 72% of Gen-Z said that they would prefer living outside Malta, the main reasons being better jobs and salaries. 93% of respondents also said that the state of the environment in our country is always getting worse.

The PN said that these figures show how the government has failed young people. It added that even though the human resource is crucial for Malta, the government has failed to understand the gravity of this situation.

"If many young people leave our country, not only will the average age of the population continue to grow, but worse than that, we will suffer from what is called brain drain, which means that we will have lost the only resource that the country has," the PN said.

The PN mentioned how besides the few positive measures implemented in the Budget 2023 to mitigate the challenge of the cost of living, the budget did not offer any plan or vision for the future.

"What investment will be made in existing industry verticals? What kind of value-added jobs for young people and Maltese workers will be created? What kind of sectors which pay good wages and not cheap labour will be created? Above all, what vision will the government be creating for our young people to have a better quality of life?" the PN asked.

The PN expressed its concern as it did not hear anything from that budget that might address improvements to the quality of life. It said that the government has given up on solving problems which are hurting young people, families and Maltese businesses on a daily basis. The PN mentioned "the traffic problem, pollution, the lack of open spaces, patients in corridors, the lack of meritocracy, the lack of transparency, and the lack of planning in the field of construction."

The party insists that the government takes immediate action to address the issues, by offering more job opportunities for young people to ensure that Malta's quality of life begins to improve.
