Prime Minister, Robert Abela, addressed Maltese Ambassadors on diplomatic missions around the world on Thursday.

When addressing Maltese Ambassadors on diplomatic missions abroad, Abela emphasised that Malta’s representatives have a responsibility to ensure peace and prosperity.

During a conference held in Malta for Maltese Ambassadors, Prime Minister Abela stressed the need to continue providing a bright future for the Maltese people. He mentioned that the future is not some distant reality.

“You have a crucial role to play in advancing our country’s interests and exploring new opportunities”, Abela said, noting that while international challenges persist, the cornerstone of everything is security and peace, something safeguarded in Malta, and these are reflected in economic growth, attracting investments in various sectors such as health, education and energy.

Prime Minister Abela also mentioned how the country will continue to serve on the United Nations Security Council, and in April, it will once again hold the Presidency of this Council, while also currently presiding over the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) throughout this year. He noted the important role that Malta plays in supporting the protection of OSCE values and principles in relation to security.

The Prime Minister also remarked on the diversification of the Maltese economy to continue offering different opportunities and also highlighted a strong regulatory framework that the country adopts in various areas. Prime Minister Abela also emphasised the importance of cultural diplomacy and referred to the Art Biennale that will take place in Malta in the coming years, with the aim of bringing together different people.

Abela said the Government is now formally applying for the country to join the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). He stated that Malta is doing this not only to be more actively involved in shaping international policy and promoting its interests, but also to support common interests of smaller states like Malta.

Abela concluded by thanking the Ambassadors and officials in the Diplomatic Service for their work in the interest of our country, expressing optimism that the future will bring more opportunities for Malta.
