‘Kwadri’: A fourfold Vision of Unique Artistic Styles
Gemelli Art Gallery, at Ta’Qali will be presenting a collection of art works entitled Kwadri from the 30 April till 25 May. Carmel Bonello, Kevin Sciberras, Ethelbert Perini and Antonio Mifsud are presenting a series of works in their respective style and media. Kwadri comprises works in different mediums, all inspired by the local surroundings. This exhibition celebrates the magic of collaboration and the beauty each artwork presents.
Carmel Bonello is an expressionist artist. He experiments in his art works to create original works by using different mediums and explores various themes and subjects. The artist had several personal and collective art exhibitions in Malta and other countries and his work is found in private and public places in Malta and abroad.
Ethelbert Perini studied under the late Harry Alden, his art teacher who pushed him to pursue his creative ideas. Further tutorship followed with Anton Calleja at the School of Art and later in his studio in Bahrija. An accidental introduction to pastel triggered experimentation in this medium, subjects varying from still life landscapes, the human figure and portraits. He continually explores this medium using different types of soft pastels on paper and board, moving away from the traditional way of pastel art where blending is involved. He participates in collective exhibitions and recently had his first solo
exhibition at the Phoenicia Hotel.
Kevin Sciberras is best known for his paintings of Maltese architectural landmarks. He is mainly inspired by his physical surroundings especially by urbanscapes that are completely devoid of figures. Through his art we perceive familiar places in a whole new way. Each work brings a sublime light into his iconic landmarks as his subjects are characterised by visible brushstrokes and rich layers of paint. Diluted acrylic paint allows him to use very thin washes of layered surfaces of transparent veils. Consistent throughout are the planes of light intersecting and overlapping each other. The layers of paint are applied in glazes to allow the light to radiate from within the painting. He allows his subjects to fade away into gestural strokes and brilliant highlights that define his style. He lets his emotions dictate his use of colour and the strength of his brushstrokes.
Antonio Mifsud received his education at the Archbishop’s Seminary and at the University of Malta. His first art mentor was Dr Gorg Mallia. He later studied privately under the renowned sculptor Chev. Alfred Camilleri Cauchi, O.R.C.B. Works by Mifsud are found in local churches and public places. Abroad his works can be found in private homes particularly in the UK, Canada and the Holy Land. Antonio Mifsud has also exhibited his sculptures and paintings in various national and international exhibitions. He was awarded second prize in the sculpture section when he represented Malta in the 6th Edition of the Editorial Project on Sacred Art which was held in the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium. Antonio Mifsud has organised six solo exhibitions to date.
