Switch off, Unplug, Save – More than meets the eye!!

- Matthew Ben Attard & Joachim Zammit

We refer to your article on The Malta Business Weekly dated 26 September entitled Switch off, Unplug, Save. We are hereby appealing to the good sense of your readers in correcting this little piece of misinformed journalism. When we set out to prepare our presentation and stand for this fair, we had to learn the demanding art of scientific methodology and presentation. In contrast to other countries, we did not have the luxury of any form of tutorship and specialised laboratory support, not to mention funding, but we managed to design a decent presentation that albeit simple, stood up to all orthodox scientific principles.

On arriving at the Science Fair and meeting the other participants who were all older than us (17- to 21-year-old), we realized that their projects were truly outstanding and advanced projects that had been financed and supported. Nonetheless, clad in the official EUCYS Science Fair polo shirts, we stood our ground alongside the other participants.

Now comes the unfortunate incident ... On the third day of the fair, having just arrived at the stand, from the cold weather outside, and oblivious of potential conse- quences, we were still wearing our preferred cardigans when we were photographed. Unfortunately, that picture was promptly posted on the science fair website, ready for some inconsiderate to report on!

We are not sure what your agenda was when writing your article, but we are certain that neither we, nor any other of our fellow Maltese students have gained anything from your article. We do hope that in future while filling your front pages, you will exercise more discretion and sensitivity.
