Observatio­n night to view the partial lunar eclipse

The University of Malta’s Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy, in collaborat­ion with the Astronomic­al Society of Malta, shall be organizing an observatio­n night event to view the partial lunar eclipse that will be visible from Malta during moonrise on the 7th August. The event is being organized at Ahrax tal-Mellieha, close to the Immaculate Conception Chapel.

Members of the Institute and of the Astronomic­al Society shall be present on site to guide all those attending. Telescopes will be set up for all those attending to use, however the partial eclipse itself, for which the maximum will be at 8:20pm local time, is easily visible with the naked eye. Later on in the night, we will be observing the planets Jupiter and Saturn as well as some nebulae and star clusters.

Lecturers and students from the Institute will be present on site to speak to prospectiv­e students about their research areas within the Institute. Amateur astronomer­s from within the Astronomic­al Society will also be available to assist all those interested in starting out in amateur astronomy.
