Etienne Bonello and Michelle Vella Wood of Team Greens crowned as champions

The National Time Trial Championsh­ip 2017 organised by the Malta Cycling Federation crowned some new champions this year.

In the Elite category, Etienne Bonello of Team Greens CC had the great satisfacti­on of becoming champion on his 19th year in local cycling. Despite his age, this title success was due to his focus and dedication. Bonello finished with a total of 575 points, from two wins at Mriehel Bypass and Mtarfa and a second place at il-Mizieb. Second and third place overall was obtained by Christian Formosa (The Cyclist) and Nicholas Micallef (Mosta AF Sign Studio CC) with 410 and 385 points, respective­ly.

Michelle Vella Wood of Team Greens doubled the title as she was also crowned the Road Race Champion. She won the championsh­ip with 575 points, two wins at Mtarfa and il-Mizieb and second place at Mriehel Bypass. Exchampion Marie Claire Aquilina also of Team Greens finished second with 375 points, while Marion Pullicino of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC finished third with 175 points.

Nicholas Attard Montalto of The Cyclist won another Junior Championsh­ip after dominating also in the Road Race Championsh­ip. In the Time Trial, he also won with an impressive tally of 600 maximum points. Second place was obtained by his teammate Isaac Spiteri with 525 points, while Gianluca Camilleri of Birkirkara St Joseph SC finished third with 310 points.

The Masters 40+ category was dominated by Ivan Zammit of Birkirkara St Joseph SC with maximum points of 600 so that he doubled the title this year after also being crowned Road Race Champion. Gozitan Domenic Cutajar was classified second with a tally of 460 points, while Gaetano Degabriele of Team Greens was third with 415 points.

The 50+ Masters Championsh­ip saw again the success of Nicky Farrugia of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC with 400 points gained from two wins at the Mriehel Bypass and Mtarfa. Teammate Michael Lia finished second with 375 points, while Kenneth Zammit of The Cyclist finished third with 350 points. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Camilleri of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC remained as the Masters Championsh­ip 60+ with a maximum of 600 points winning all three races. He was also the Road Race Champion of the same category.

The Championsh­ips for the Under 15s was won by Christina Spiteri of The Cyclist who obtained the maximum 600 points. Second was ex-champion Veronique Pace Asciak of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC with 525 points.

Meanwhile, Nikol Micallef of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC ended as champion in his category with 540 points, gained from two wins at the Mriehel Bypass and Mtarfa and fourth place at Il-Mizieb. Second finished Mika Zammit of Agones SFC with 495 points and third classified Malcolm Vassallo of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC with 490 points.

The Maltese Cycling Federation would like to give thanks to timing system provider ARRTS team, who took care of the race timing, to each respective local council for all their cooperatio­n, the Police Department who were of great and continuous assistance as well as the Malta Red Cross Operations and the many volunteers who acted as timekeeper­s and marshals.
