Analogue TV will be discontinued on 17 April
As part of an exercise to release frequencies for continuous improvement and advancement of communication services, Melita’s analogue reception service will be discontinued on 17 April.
“The main aim of this exercise is to increase capacities and speeds that cater for the ever-increasing demand for broadband. Last November Melita launched Gigapower gigabit internet for homes and businesses in St Julian’s, Sliema and Valletta. Freeing up analogue frequencies will allow us to keep expanding gigabit internet across the Maltese islands,” explained Simon Montanaro, chief Technology officer.
When gigabit internet was launched in November, the service was initially available in St Julian’s, Sliema and Valletta. Melita are now rolling out the 1 Gbps or 1000 Mbps internet service to parts of Swieqi, Attard, Ta’ Xbiex, Gzira and more.
“This will keep Malta at the forefront of digital technology and further improve reliability of home internet and deliver faster speeds,” added Mireille Muscat, head of Marketing.
All Maltese channels stopped broadcasting in analogue with the advent of free to air digital terrestrial TV in 2011. Melita started its transition from analogue to digital just over 10 years ago and is now in the process of transferring the few remaining analogue connections to digital services.
All those subscribed to Melita’s analogue reception service, (TV transmission without box) whether for their main TV set or an additional one, are invited to get a digital box at no additional cost and users will enjoy more than 40 channels including all RAI and Mediaset Channels as well as alltime favourites: LA 5, Discovery and the children’s channel Boomerang.
All analogue users including those whose analogue service is currently not officially registered with Melita, are invited to call on 2727 9977 between 9am and 6pm, Monday to Friday to claim their box and to start benefitting from many more TV channels and better TV quality.
No penalties will apply in the case of customers wishing to upgrade from a non-official or non-registered analogue service.
