Record numbers for this year’s Express Trailers Żurrieq Half Marathon & 10km run and walk

-

Over 1,500 athletes have applied to participate in the forthcoming 2018 Express Trailers Żurrieq Half Marathon, 10km run and 10km walk that will be held on Sunday, 11 November. This is 400 more applicants than last year, making the event the most popular one after the Malta Marathon. This is the 21st edition of this annual race.

“We’re pleased that the organisers kept on investing to ensure the highest levels of safety on the roads during the event, which passes through five different localities. The aspect of safety is going to feature very strongly in this year’s edition which will promote our Express Road Safety campaign. In fact, this year, the participating athletes’ numbers will feature the Express Road Safety Campaign logo with the race number superimposed on it,” said Franco Azzopardi, chairman and CEO of Express Trailers.

“Our support of the Express Trailers Żurrieq Half Marathon is in line with the intrinsic message that we want to deliver through this campaign − that whether we are at the helm of our car, whether we are pedestrians, whether we are on a bicycle, a motorbike, a scooter or simply jogging on the road, we are all responsible for each other’s safety. Runners and cyclists are among the most vulnerable and the Road Safety campaign’s comittment is to promote the safety of the more vulnerable road users,” added Azzopardi.

Żurrieq Wolves Athletics and the Żurrieq Local Council started organising the annual half marathon in 1997, an event that used to attract around 130 athletes.

In 2013, prompted by the Malta Marathon Organizing Committee’s taking over of the race’s organisation, Express Trailers came on board as the main sponsors of this annual event which for the first time, also included a 10km race.

Since then, participation has been increasing substantially and today, the Express Trailers Żurrieq Half Marathon & 10km run and walk is the second most popular road-running event in Malta.
