Malta Stock Exchange ‘rings the bell for financial literacy’
The Malta Stock Exchange held a bell ringing ceremony during World Investor Week 2019 –30 September to 4 October – to promote the importance of financial literacy.
The third World Investor Week, sponsored by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions and the World Federation of Exchanges, is a weeklong, global campaign to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection and to highlight the various initiatives of securities regulators in these two critical areas.
Minister for Finance Prof. Edward Scicluna and the chairman of the Malta Stock Exchange rang the bell as a symbolic gesture to promote financial literacy and investor education. In his address, the minister stressed the importance of making sound and educated investment decisions, learning how to manage one’s financial affairs and planning for retirement as being foundations that everyone should have.
Joseph Portelli, chairman of the Exchange explained how active the Exchange has been in fostering financial literacy through the Malta Stock Exchange Institute and how it was contributing to increasing the level of financial literacy among the investing public, as well as providing specialised and topical training opportunities for the many practitioners who work in the financial services sector.
He said that it was part of the Exchange’s corporate social responsibility to contribute to enhancing financial literacy and investor education. The Exchange will soon be offering its fifth edition of its Annual Investor Education Conference on 6 November.
