Scheme for the redemption of temporary emphyteuses and leases on residential properties
Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and parliamentary secretary for Planning and the Property Market Chris Agius announced that from 1 October a scheme for the redemption of temporary emphyteusis and leases with the Joint Office on residential properties came into effect. The scheme was announced last May and will be administered by the Joint Office and the Lands Authority.
The minister encouraged all those eligible to access the guidelines and the application to benefit from this opportunity to obtain their property in their name. He reminded those present that earlier this year, the same Authority also saw to the facilitation of agricultural land transfer, another scheme that directly affects the quality of life of a sector of our society.
While prices are comparable to prices of preceding schemes, the scheme will nonetheless remain open for an indefinite period so that anyone who is eligible is given the opportunity to prepare themselves for any costs related to this redemption.
“I reiterate our full commitment to continue seeing more such schemes that prioritise the citizen and that truly deliver success to the people. This is the meaning of a successful country, one that is able to tangibly improve quality of life and the standard of living,” concluded the minister.
“We will continue working to give more families the opportunity to own their homes,” stated Agius. He continued to explain that, thanks to this scheme, families who have been waiting for a number of years to truly become owners of their home can fulfil their wish.
“We are giving Maltese and Gozitan families living in government property, subject to temporary emphyteusis or rent, the opportunity to become owners of their homes. This scheme is aimed towards residents and not businesses or commercial properties,” explained the parliamentary secretary.
The parliamentary secretary reiterated that this is another scheme being issued by the Lands Authority together with the Joint Office so that requests that have been pending for many years can be solved. It is the government’s commitment that more families can become owners of their homes and economic success continues reaching more people.
