GRTU urges new PM to ensure that economic activity returns to normality

-

The GRTU Malta Chamber of SMEs has congratulated Dr Robert Abela on being elected Labour Party leader and prime minister and urged him to start working on improving Malta’s image abroad.

“Through concrete actions and decisions, we must send a clear message that shortcomings will be addressed and taken seriously,” it said.

“We have to, above everything else, ensure that the institutions function property. This can be done through meticulous reforms and without dragging of feet, especially when it comes to transparency, accountability and meritocracy.”

The GRTU said that, after the “shocking” developments of the last weeks, the country needs a serious and mature leadership to ensure that economic activity returns to normality.

“The new leadership must show that dishonest people and those who surround themselves with unethical persons have no place in government. A clear message must be sent out that Malta will only accept the highest level of ethics and this has to be safeguarded by adequate standards and laws.”

The Chamber said that, as a member of the MCESD, it will be taking an active part in consultation to draft a document that proposes important reforms the country needs to shed the negative image that has been cast upon it.

Government should also defend Malta’s 100,000+ businesses because these businesses are not corrupt − they are against corruption, the GRTU said.

Businesses will be paying for all that happened, it said, adding that it would immediately start working with the new prime minister for the good of the country, businesses and families.
