BOV Retrospective Exhibition 2020 celebrates the works of Celia Borg Cardona
Bank of Valletta will be launching the 27th edition of its Retrospective Art Exhibition celebrating the works of Celia Borg Cardona and her bold, vigorous and expressive brushworks.
The BOV Retrospective Art Exhibition will be hosted at the Gran Salon at the Auberge de Provence (National Museum of Archaeology) in Republic Street, Valletta. This magnificent baroque hall, a work of art in itself, is currently being meticulously restored through the support of Bank of Valletta. It provides a wonderful backdrop for the works of Celia Borg Cardona.
The exhibition will be inaugurated by President George Vella and will be open to the public until 4 March from 9am till 5pm every day with the last admission at 4.30pm. The exhibition will feature 29 works of art showcasing the use of different media and follows the evolution of Celia’s work from 2002.
The art of Celia Borg Cardona is usually concerned with the unusual viewpoint, very often of groups of people seen from a high viewpoint either casually strolling in streets or engaged in group activities such as processions and band marches, Maltese streetscapes and buildings, including iconic ones. She revels in the use of oil and acrylic paint, leaving as much evidence of her marks on the surface of the canvas as possible.
The exhibition curator Francesca Balzan said that she has been following Celia Borg Cardona’s art from practically her first public showing many years ago. “Though she has evolved through the years, exploring different themes and materials, the recurring factor is the strength and conviction of her painting. This trait makes her art greatly compelling to the viewer and confirms that you don’t require an academic knowledge of art to recognise when you are in the presence of truly good art. It moves you in ways that you cannot quite explain, but move you it does. Celia’s work can be sketchy, large scale and very often vertiginous. Her sweeping views, often of Maltese landscapes, occasionally unusual and topical subject matter and extreme viewpoints with energetic lines of force expressed in a bold palette make for unforgettable work that grips the viewer. A retrospective that pays homage to her art is an opportunity to revisit her work through the years and will serve to introduce her art to a wider public.”
