Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Julia Farrugia Portelli inaugurated the Horeca Seminar, which, for the first time, is being hosted in The Malta Catering Expo 2020.

This expo showcases the latest trends and innovations in the catering industry by Malta’s leading suppliers. This year, a total of 16 exhibitors are taking part.

Minister Farrugia Portelli explained that “contemporary travellers will place greater emphasis on authenticity and locally sourced experiences ranging from traditional architecture to local foodstuffs and products”.

She added that in an environment where the expenditure on food is the single highest component of expenditure by tourists visiting the Maltese islands, uniqueness and originality are equally important.

Minister Farrugia Portelli said that the areas being covered by this important event will continue to constitute major pillars of tomorrow’s tourism experience. “Investing wisely will ensure that we continue to sustain the successes our industry has achieved in the last years,” said Minister Farrugia Portelli.

Among the speakers at the seminar were, deputy CEO of the Malta

Tourism Authority Leslie Vella, vice-president of MHRA George Micallef and CEO of the Institute of Tourism Studies Pierre Fenech.

This expo is also hosting the Malta Kulinarja competition with more than 200 chefs, including a team from Italy, participating in this challenge.
