Gozo’s first Reverse Osmosis plant inaugurated

-

The first Reverse Osmosis plant in Ħondoq ir-Rummien, Gozo was recently inaugurated.

The €11m project was co-financed through EU funds. The plant, which will improve the access, quality and supply of water for residents of Gozo, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Robert Abela, Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri and Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.

The project, run by the Water Services Corporation, has the capacity to produce about 9,000 cubic metres of high quality of water daily.

The plant is equipped with modern pipes, which enable efficient use of energy, government said.

Prime Minister Abela said that he believes that Gozo has huge potential for environmental and digital transformations. With this project, Gozo can stop being dependent on Malta for the supply of water and through this plant, which was deemed one of the most efficient globally, Gozo will even begin supplying water to Malta.

"Additionally, this government aspires to gain independence for the supply of energy, and eventually, the complete use of renewable energy," said Abela.

"The Reverse Osmosis in Gozo will provide autonomy to the island when it comes to the supply of water. It will enhance the sustainable use of water while ensuring high quality supply for the residents of Gozo. Moreover, by improving the quality of tap water, we can reduce the use of plastic bottles," explained Minister Dalli.

Parliamentary secretary Zrinzo Azzopardi said that this is one of the many projects to reduce the impact on the environment.

He added that through this project government is emphasising the importance which is being given to the environment by ensuring the use of natural resources on the island.

Present at the inauguration was the chief Executive officer at Water Services Corporation Ivan Falzon and other workers, entities and stakeholders involved in the project.
