Atlas Insurance installs two defibrillators outside its Ta’ Xbiex offices

-

Atlas Insurance has installed two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at its Ta’ Xbiex office in Abate Rigord Street, as well as at its Head Office on the seafront. The two AEDs were installed on the exterior of the buildings in case of emergency for Atlas staff as well as for use by the general public.

An AED is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, such as when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping. In such occurrences blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs, leading to an extreme and immediate medical emergency.

The AED is a sophisticated yet easy-to-use medical device that analyses the heart’s rhythm (or lack of) and if necessary, delivers an electrical shock or defibrillation, to help the heart reestablish an effective rhythm and start pumping blood once again.

The location of these AEDs is also displayed on the mobile app AED Malta. The app displays a map of all known AED locations in Malta and Gozo and includes instructional videos on how to use an AED, perform CPR and basic first aid. Following the installation of the two machines, a webinar was organised for TeamAtlas to learn about the correct use of these devices. Furthermore, certified training will be provided to des

ignated first-aiders at Atlas which will include hands-on practice on how to use these machines in case of an emergency.

Catherine Calleja, director and company secretary of Atlas Insurance, said that the installation of these AEDs is one way the company can contribute to the welfare of the communities it serves. She stated: “Our mantra of purpose beyond profit has been part of our mission for the past years. The installation of these machines outside our offices can give a person a continued chance to live beyond sudden cardiac arrest. This is just one of our initiatives aimed at placing ESG at the heart of the way we operate.”

“This commitment to physical wellbeing through the installation of the AED machines is intrinsically linked to our ESG practices, which we have been honing for the past months and years. In this sphere we have also been active through initiatives led by The Malta Chamber Health and Wellness Committee, as well as initiatives like Mental Health Awareness Month, which we organise every year in October, not just for our employees but the general public too,” concluded Calleja.
