MEP Cutajar denounces ‘Malta’s use to divert attention from Greece’
In her contribution to the plenary debate on the rule of law in Brussels, MEP Josianne Cutajar stated that the Nationalists and the European People’s Party once again pushed for another debate and resolution on Malta in the European Parliament for partisan purposes.
“This was clearly evident in the plenary session on the eve of the debate, where the EPP first insisted that the European Parliament should not hold debates focused on particular countries, due to their opposition for a debate on Greece, but once this debate was confirmed, their narrative completely changed and they started pushing for a debate on Malta to score political points,” the Labour Party said in a statement.
Cutajar said that it is not appropriate to introduce a discussion on a member state to divert attention away from another member state. She also added that while there definitely remains
more work to be done in the field of the rule of law, not only in Malta, but also in all the other member states, the advances made cannot be ignored and another partisan and impartial resolution on Malta cannot be justified.
MEP Cutajar concluded that rather than saying what she believes, as a proud Maltese citizen, she would once again refer to what the European Commission reiterated about the positive reforms in Malta; indeed, in this same debate, Commissioner Vera Jurova recognised the positive advancement and reforms undertaken by the Labour government in the past three years, including to ensure the independence of the justice system in our country.
