Central Bank of Malta governor participates in the 2023 IMF/WBG annual meetings
The Central Bank of Malta Governor, Professor Edward Scicluna, as governor for the IMF and alternate governor for the WBG, participated in the IMF/WBG annual meetings. The events took place in Marrakesh, Morocco between 9 and 15 October.
The IMF/WBG annual meetings bring
together central bankers, international financial institutions, ministers of finance and development, private sector executives, representatives from civil society organisations and academics to discuss issues of global concern.
Discussions within this year’s annual meetings focused on building resilience, securing transformational reforms and reinvigorating global cooperation. In her Curtain Raiser Speech, IMF’s managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, highlighted the important role the Fund has to play in helping countries identify policy choices and pursuing successful growth. She also underlined that the goal must be “to build bridges to strong future growth that is both sustainable and inclusive”.
The governor was accompanied by Alexander Demarco, deputy governor of the Central Bank of Malta. On the
sidelines of the events, Governor Scicluna also met with the executive directors of the IMF and the WBG respectively, representatives of a leading rating agency and a number of bankers and central bankers. Prof. Scicluna was also interviewed by the CNBC senior correspondent Silvia Amaro.
With 190 member countries, the IMF and the WBG have essential roles in upholding the international financial system. The IMF ensures global economic stability, while the WBG works on poverty reduction and development in lower-income nations.
